A black hole is the boundary between the visible and the possible. This project works at that boundary, and it grows by one impulse at a time.

How this number is composed
The public reading has two separate parts. The legacy signal is the frozen value of the project's earlier public display — it is preserved unchanged and it is not a list of people. New joins are real registrations, counted separately and counted once.

Your impulse
Joining writes a permanent node into the registry, with a position and a coordinate of your own, and moves the count toward the opening. Your node stays yours to open, and yours to erase.
Your node is stored
Recovery key — your only way back in
Nothing is emailed. The server keeps only a hash of this key and cannot send it to you again.
A shared coordinate carries the node id only. It never carries your address or your key. A node is a position in a sequence — not a holding, not an asset, and it confers nothing that can be traded.

Enter the recovery key you were shown when you joined. It is the only way back in: there is no password and no email round trip, and an address on its own will never open a node.
What is stored, what is public, how erasure works
- Stored privately: your contact address, as a one-way hash, plus a hash of your recovery key. Never the key itself.
- Public: your node id, your position, your derived coordinate, and the public name if you chose one. Never your address.
- Erasure: with your recovery key you can delete the private record entirely. Your position stays in the sequence, emptied, so that nobody else's position shifts.
- Not collected: identity documents, payment details, location. A registration is an unused address — it is not a verified person, and this project never counts it as one.

How this picture is made
The page draws a fixed number of the most recent nodes and never more, however large the registry grows — so this view costs the same at ten participants and at ten million. Each position comes from a coordinate derived from the node identifier itself. It is not anyone's location.

Where these lines come from
Every line corresponds to a stored event in the project's database, written at the moment the thing happened. Nothing here is generated for decoration, and no line is added to make the page look busy.
Research chapters
Sources are gathered and compared, the text passes human editing, and established results, calculated results and open questions are labelled separately. Every published chapter lists its sources so you can check them. The queue is ordered partly by the directions participants choose.
